Women Love Men Who Love Cats

Johnny Cash and his cat
CALLING ALL MEN!

If you want more success with the ladies - get yourself a cat.

A survey for the British Cats Protection showed that women were more attracted to men who liked animals.

Men who like cats are also more likely to be perceived by women as being nicer, more caring people.
Dr Scott Miller, TV Vet and celebrity Cats Protection Week supporter, was pleased to hear the survey findings.

"I think women find the presence of a cat in a bachelor pad not only a good indication of character, but also confirms our sensitive side which many women hopefully find attractive! As a single man, my two cats give me all the unconditional love I need on a daily basis."

Although there are almost 3.5 times the number of female cat owners in the UK than their male equivalent, the survey found that our cats are definitely benefiting from men having felines too.

"We found that cats are no longer a solely female domain," said researcher, Dr June McNicholas.

"Modern men are fast getting in touch with their feline side, and enjoy lavishing love and care on their cats just as much as women do, if not more. This can only be a good thing for all concerned."

According to the findings, single male cat owners are more likely than their female counterparts to have made, or consider making a sacrifice for their cat, including giving up a holiday (to avoid putting the cat in a cattery) and even going into debt for their feline friend if needs be! Single men are also almost as likely as single women to consider choosing their cat over their partner, or break a friendship rather than lose their cat.

The resounding majority of both male and female respondents agreed that it's not soppy or uncool for a man to love his furry friend, with almost three-quarters of men reporting their cats give them a much-needed cuddle factor, and the same number of single men enjoying lavishing care and attention on their cat.

Parcel Puss Travels 750 Miles By Accident

We all know how much cats LOVE cardboard boxes. If I fits, I sits!

But Baloo crept into a box destined to be transported 750 miles away. His owner Jackie Lake had packed up box of tyre rims and then sealed it up without realising her beloved pet was inside.

Baloo was carried off by a Purolator van on a 17 hour journey from Nova Scotia in Canada to Montreal. The next day Jackie realised Baloo was missing and frantically started to search for him. But by then he had arrived in Montreal and was discovered by a Puralator employee.

Jackie was relieved to get a call from the SPCA to say Baloo had been found and organised for him to be shipped home again.

"I can't stop thanking these people for helping me," said Jackie. "They took really good care of him. I'm just eternally grateful."

"He was a little freaked out when he first got home, he's had quite the ordeal. I just kept picking him up and saying 'I'm sorry,'" she said.

"But by the end of the night he was back to his old mischievous self. He ripped a whole bag of cat litter in the bathroom so he and his brother could play in it while I was sleeping."

Lake is glad to have Baloo back, though she said it might take some time for her three kids to forgive and forget.

"I'm told I'm not allowed near boxes or the animals any more!" she said.

The Purrfect Christmas Tree

If your Christmas tree ends up like the one in the picture - thanks to your 'helpful' kitty - one British firm has come up with a solution.

Argos are targeting people with naughty cats with an artificial tree that should prevent them from messing with decorations or, at worst, pulling the whole thing down.

That's because the tree, while still standing at 6 feet, is only a half parasol, meaning there isn't as much tree for cats to get their paws on and it could also be a preventative measure for any over excited little toddlers too!

The Argos tree.
The Home 6ft Half Parasol Christmas Tree's online product description reads "Keep your perfectly placed baubles, bows and bells out of reach of curious, crawling kids or your cats' playful paws with this 6ft parasol tree.

"If Santa's been extra generous, there's plenty of room to stack pressies underneath rather than scattering them around it. It's also a great alternative to the traditional tree if you're a tad tight for space."

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Keep Fit Kitty

You know how it is with cats. They like to keep fit. This fluffy feline was filmed doing her daily dozen under a car in China!

Well, you have to look your best at all times, especially if you want to be first in the queue when fishy treats are being handed out. So let's get those sit-ups going: one, two, three, four....

Does Your Cat Love You?

Not all cats are overtly affectionate, some are more withdrawn than others. But there are ways to tell whether your feline friends like you.

1. They headbutt you: Headbutting identifies you as one of their friends. They also use head butting to mark their territory as they have scent glands on their chins, cheeks, forehead and lips. You have been marked as part of the clan!

2. They roll over and show you their tummy: Their stomach is a vulnerable part of their body so if they roll over they are demonstrating that they love you. Warning: Cats may also expose their tummies as a submissive or defensive act when they feel cornered. If you don't know the cat well beware of rubbing their tummy, they may take a swipe at you.

3. They purr when they're with you: Cats reserve their purrs exclusively for the humans they love. They don't purr for other cats, except their own kittens. Warning: Purring can occasionally be a sign of pain. If they seem upset or distressed while purring,  check them over.

An affectionate head-butt.

4. Their tail twitches or curls around you: A cat reveals its mood with its tail. An erect and swishy tail shows its happy in your presence. A tail curled around your leg or arm is also a sign of friendship and affection. Warning: An erect tail combined with upright fur and an arched back means they feel threatened.

5. Your cat brings you presents: It might not be a present you actually want e.g. a mouse,  bird or frog, but it's the thought that counts! Actually, I don't want to disappoint anyone but it's not really a gift for you, cats bring items into a home they feel secure in.

6. Your cat nibbles you: A nibble rather than a full-on bite is a sign they like you.

7. They talk to you! Cat owners will be aware of the strange high-pitched gurgling sound. It means they're feeling friendly and sociable.

8. They follow you around: Some cat owners can't even go to the bathroom without an audience! They want to be with  you.

I love you enough to show  you my tummy.

9. They lick your hair or ears: They  are grooming you and grooming is a sign of care and affection in cats.

10. They knead you with their paws: Kittens knead their mother to stimulate milk flow, but adult cats use kneading as a way to say, "I trust you."

11. They blink slowly at you:  This is sometimes referred to as a "kitty kiss". It's a sign of love. Blink slowly back!

Baby Tiger Finds A Home

Who could resist this adorable little face?

It seems quite a few people could. The kitten was lying on a Malaysian street barely able to move with an injured leg and too weak to make a sound. Mother cat was nowhere to be found and pedestrians were passing her by.

Then Jieyan Ow came along. Jieyan had little experience of cats at but knew she couldn't leave the kitten to die in the street. She scooped her up and took her home.

The kitten was only about three weeks old and weighed just 260g (9oz). Jieyan took a crash course in caring for kittens, looking for advice on the internet. She tried to begin a regime of round-the-clock feeding but at first the little bundle was too scared to drink milk.

Soon, though, the kitten - which Jieyan named Baby Tiger - started to perk up and tucked in to some food. Soon she was purring for the first time.

The vet treated her leg which healed well.

Now Baby Tiger is part of the family. Jieyan said: "She has big round eyes, purrs a lot and demands attention all the time. She needs to be cuddled to sleep every day."

Here's a video of Baby Tiger. I hope you love it as much as I did.

Obsessed By Cats?

Obsessed by cats? Me? No, of course not. True I spend far too much time on the internet reading cat stories, looking at cat pictures, and laughing at cat videos. I'm always sharing pictures of my cat baby on Instagram and tweeting about her on Twitter. My cat Toffee even has her own Facebook page (here) and Twitter account (here) but that's normal, right?

At least I've discovered that I'm not alone when it comes to feline fandom. A survey tracking cat owners' behaviour, conducted by OnePoll, shows that of 1,000 cat owners on social media, the average cat owner "likes" 398 cat-related posts and looks at 725 cat pictures and videos in a year. The study also found that 47 percent of cat owners who were surveyed reported often taking pics of their pets and say it takes an average of three tries to get the perfect shot.

Then there are the accoutrements of being a cat owner. The poll reports that 44 per cent  have a framed photo of their cat, 43 per cent own a cat stuffed animal, and 38 per cent of owners own a cat calendar. Guilty, guilty and guilty.

The poll also found that out of 365 days, the owners surveyed spend a total of eight days talking to their cat and 20 days cuddling with their cat. That seems a conservative estimate to me!

The bonding time actually proves to be super beneficial: 60 percent of the cat owners surveyed said their cat has aided in combating loneliness, and 54 percent explain their pet is something of a support system during stressful times.

The survey showed that owners were most concerned about their cats' eating habits and amount eaten, quality of their coat, energy levels, moods and engagement levels, and, of course, their cats’ overall happiness.

Sooo, you see I'm not obsessed, I'm perfectly normal!

Jeffyne's Idyllic Job

A few weeks ago I posted a story about a job looking after up to 70 cats at a rescue centre on the idyllic Greek island of Syros (read it here).

Centre owners Richard and Joan Bowell were offering the successful applicant a wage with a lovely house near the beach to live in and a car.

The story went viral and within six weeks there were nearly 40,000 applicants. Joan kept updating the Facebook post, emphasising that the job was indeed real, and clarifying that the tiny house provided to the manager would not accommodate families or pets brought from home, and that it was a job that entailed scooping poop, cleaning vomit and making "heartbreaking" decisions about gravely wounded or sick cats.

Even so, the applications kept pouring in. Now the Bowells have made their decision and given the job to 62-year-old Californian Jeffyne Telson, whose husband sent her the link to the job ad in August.

"He said, 'Jeffyne, this job has you written all over it. Are you going to wait until you're too old to try to access your dream?'"

For 21 years, Jeffyne has run RESQCATS in Santa Barbara, California, which takes only strays - the cats found roaming alleys, the kittens located behind the shed. The cats like those on Greek islands, which Jeffyne has visited three times.

"I didn't do all the tourist stuff on the Greek islands. I separated myself from the tourists and walked up and down the streets looking for the kitties," Jeffyne said. "I thought, 'There's just so much to be done here.' "

So Jeffyne sent a letter to the Bowells, explaining that she'd placed 3,000 cats and kittens in homes over the decades. Those too sick or antisocial to be adopted stay at her sanctuary; currently, it has 15 residents, including four feline leukaemia patients in their own isolated area.

"I believe that every life is precious and worth saving, she wrote in her application.

Richard said her application stood out immediately. The Bowells travelled to Santa Barbara to meet Jeffyne in mid-September, and he said that "there was an instant connection between Joan and Jeffyne - and the other way around." Jeffyne, like Joan Bowell, is an artist. She, too, has never had children.

Jeffyne said she would leave her rescue centre in the care of volunteers this winter, when it shuts down for the season, and spend several months in Syros.

Salem, Sabrina The The Teenage Witch's Cat

I was reading Birgit's blog and she mentioned Sabrina The Teenage Witch. I must confess I was probably a little too old to appreciate it fully when it was on TV but I did remember the wonderfully sassy cat Salem.

It seems I'm not the only one to be a fan of the smart-aleck cat. Lara, from the UK, loved the show when she was teenager.

Her husband Sam said: "My wife Lara had always wanted a black cat. This came from her childhood love of witches. Her favourite TV show growing up was Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and the witch had a talking black cat as a pet.

"We could not believe it when Cats Protection told us that many of the cats in their care are actually black, because many people simply don’t want them. This made Lara really sad."

I wrote about the unpopularity of black cats in my post Black Cats Rule

Sam and Lara were introduced to Coco at their Cats Protection and fell in love with her straight away.

Speaking as part of Purina and Cats Protection's Unadoptables campaign - which celebrates the fact no cat is unadoptable - Sam said: "Sadly, many of the cats in care are black. Where it was once superstition and the fear of bad luck, a growing trend to why black cats are often overlooked is because apparently, they don’t photograph well for people’s social feeds."

Sam and Lara originally looked into adopting a black kitten for their little girls - but they were just as thrilled when the family found a cat who was a little older. Sam said: "The girls weren’t at all sad that she’s not a kitten, they absolutely love her.

"The first day we took her home, she vanished. We looked everywhere. I couldn’t believe it when we found her in our girls’ room as they are so noisy and manic. In the drawers under their bed, I could just see a little bit of fur snuggled amongst the fancy dress."

If you can't remember much about Salem, here's a little video for  you.

And finally... you can't keep a good cat down! This Youtube video (nothing at all to do with the story above) made me laugh.

What's In A (Cat's) Name?

You talking to me?

Take care when naming your cat. According to a veterinarian, if you want puss to take any  notice of you, you should pick a name that sounds high-pitched.

Canadian veterinarian Dr Uri Burstyn says cats' ears are finely attuned to higher noises.  Ideally, you want your cat’s name to end in a high frequency, since that’s the kind of sound cats hear best and naturally pay attention to. After all, mice squeak and birds chirp. They have more trouble hearing low-frequency sounds. So Felix or Garfield aren't ideal names but Fluffy is fine.

And that's why "kitty kitty" works pretty well to get a cat to listen to you. It's a squeaky sound.

Below Dr. Uri, helped by his friend Lancelot, shows how the right name can get your cat's attention.

If you more ideas of what to name your cat and to read the wonderful poem The Naming Of Cats by T.S. Eliot, look at another post here.

Cat Cuddler Wanted

Best friends Choccy and Fluffy need to be rehomed together.

A British animal rescue charity has been overwhelmed with offers of help after asking people to come and cuddle and play with cats.

The RSPCA in Furness-in-Barrow has eight cats in its cattery at the moment and they are trying to find homes for them all. In the meantime the cats are looking for a bit of human interaction to get them used to people.

The branch asked ''crazy cat ladies and gentlemen' if they had a spare hour or two a week to volunteer.

Michelle Round, an RSPCA volunteer and cat fosterer who made the post on Facebook, said: "We couldn't believe the response. We have been overwhelmed with all the messages from people wanting to volunteer to play with the cats."

Casper: Please adopt me!

She added "We are looking for people who can make a regular visit, once or twice a week, not a one off visit. Some cats want to play and some are more timid."

The cats include lovely Casper. The RSPCA are desperate for Casper to find his furever home as he has been at the cattery for seven months now after his owner died. He loves to be outside so he needs to find a loving home.

Also at the cattery are Blackie, an adorable and quiet female cat, lovable best pals Choccy and Fluffy, who need to be rehomed together, affectionate Connie, who is around 18-months-old, and cute kittens Daisy and Rosie.

The cats are vaccinated, wormed and microchipped. Contact: Tel: 01229 824583 or email fandbrspca@talktalk.net

Introducing A Cat To Your Children

You may have had a cat in the family when you were a child. Now you want to give your children the pleasure of loving and caring for an animal.

First make sure children want a cat and they understand that caring for a living breathing creature is a big responsibility.

Be prepared to assume those responsibilities yourself. Children should be taught to take care of some of the chores if they are old enough, but if they lose interest it will be up to you.

Remember:
  •  No matter how laid back or tolerant your cat is you should never leave a toddler unattended with a cat. Even older children should be under your supervision until you are quite sure that the cat and your kids respect each other.
  • Try to have a place that your cat can retreat to when he or she does not  want the attention of kids (or adults for that matter.)  Sometimes children do not understand the cat does not want to play or be petted and your cat needs somewhere to be alone.
  • Children need to be told just how sharp the claws and teeth of a cat are. Explain that cats can bite and scratch if teased, stressed or over excited. Show your children how to play gently with the cat.
  • Kittens may not be the best choice for very young children. Toddlers may not understand how fragile a kitten is and that an over enthusiastic hug could harm it. A kitten is also less able to tolerate the rapid movement and shouting of a very young child. An adult cat may be a better fit.
  • Demonstrate to your children the proper way to hold a cat. Show them how to gently pick kitty up with one hand supporting the chest and the other hand the back legs. If your kids are too young to learn how to do this they should be dissuaded from trying to pick up your cat.  Tell your children to beware of a cat's sensitive areas such as stomach, tail, ears and paws.

A strong bond can develop between kids and cats and this can teach them love and respect for animals that can last for the rest of their lives. Teaching your children the basics of looking after their pet will reward them for years to come.

The Purrfect Job

One rescued cat on the idyllic Greek island of Syros

If only I didn't have responsibilities here in the UK because I have just found a purrfect job, looking after up to 70 cats on the idyllic Greek island of Syros.

Not only do you get paid for just fours hours work a day but you get a lovely house near the beach to live in with all the bills paid and a car. The job is at the God's Little People Cat Rescue on Syros run by Richard and Joan Bowell. He is Danish and she's a Brit.

They moved to the island seven years ago where they found kittens thrown away in garbage cans, starving cats relying on scraps and feral and injured cats that needed care.

They began taking in strays and working with local veterinarians to improve the health of the village cat colony and the overall island population. They backed a sterilisation project, funded dental operations, had sick eyes removed, and nursed motherless kittens through the night. If a cat dies, Mrs Bowell buries them and places a stone.

“Now you hardly see distressed cats on Syros,” said Mr Bowell.

The job was posted on Facebook (look here).  Ms Bowell, an artist, is looking for someone over the age of 45, who is not only capable of loving the cats, but also knows how to "trap or handle a feral or non-sociable cat" and has a good knowledge of cat psychology.

At first the Facebook posts got a handful of likes as Mrs Bowell tried to find homes for cats on Syros. Now her job advertisement post has gone viral with thousands of people from all over the world applying for the job.

The position comes with a salary up to €600 (£536, $683) a month, with bills, housing and veterinary expenses paid, starting November 1, after a voluntary two-week transition period in October.

Dog Saves Cat's Life

Zephyr meets his saviour Harlie.

A LITTLE black and white kitten's eyesight was saved thanks to help from a Great Dane dog.

Eight-week-old Zephyr was found with three siblings under a shed in Liverpool in the UK. They had flu which had led to secondary pneumonia, horrific conjunctivitis with ulcerated eyes, ticks and severe flea infestation leading to anaemia and dehydration. Sadly one the kittens died. Two of them, Zouse and Zee, responded well to eye drops but Zephyr didn't. It was feared he would go blind.

So vets used a new technique to save his sight, treating him with serum drops made from elements of Great Dane Harlie's blood. The blood was separated using a centrifuge with the liquid part made into drops which help the surface of the eye to heal and stop tissue breaking down.

Steph Taylor of the Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary said: “The serum from Harlie was fairly unusual for us to use and we have never done it before. There are several types of conventional medicated drops and we used these first but as Zephyr was not responding to these, our vet suggested it.

Harlie’s owner Jess Parr, 30, said she wanted to help after seeing an appeal. She said: “I love cats and would love to have one, if I didn’t have four dogs."
Zephyr: On the mend.

Now Zephyr is on the road to recovery and has been introduced to Harlie. Jess  said: “We were a bit worried about how Harlie would react to Zephyr. She has never met a cat in person, except for the one next door that walks up and down the garden fence just out of reach,  taunting her.

“Harlie is a big clumsy dog but when she was with Zephyr she was so gentle, it was almost like her maternal instinct kicked in."
Zephyr will be rehomed with his two brothers Zouse and Zee next weekend.
Harlie, Zephyr and Steph.

Feline Diabetes

Early detection of feline diabetes can save your cat's life.

SYMPTOMS for feline diabetes can vary considerably because many of the symptoms of are characteristic of other illnesses and diseases. Some of the more common symptoms of feline diabetes include the following:

  • an increase in thirst is one of the earliest and most noticeable symptoms. Ordinarily, cats whose diet consists primarily of wet canned food may not drink a lot of water due to the high water content of their food. So you may notice that the level in your cat's water bowl is dropping faster than usual.
  • frequent urination
  • weight loss
  • loss of appetite
  • dull coat
  • walking on hocks (joint of the rear leg) instead of paws
  • cataracts forming on eyes

If your cat is exhibiting any of these symptoms take it to a veterinarian. Diagnosis of cat diabetes is not necessarily straightforward, since stress and other illnesses can cause temporary imbalances in your cat's blood glucose levels. A thorough physical exam as well as an array of blood and urine tests are needed to obtain a proper diagnosis.

What is the Treatment for Cat Diabetes?

With early detection, your cat may continue to live a normal and otherwise healthy life. Regular exams should be scheduled to ensure the continued good health of your cat, and in all likelihood, your cat will need injections of insulin twice a day. This is a simple procedure that your vet can train you how to do. Once the diabetes is under control, you may be able to reduce the amount of insulin. In the meantime, the best routine to develop is to give the injection to your cat every morning and evening right after its meal.

Special Diet

There are cat food formulations that have been optimized for diabetic cats. If your vet recommends this as an approach to controlling your cat's diabetes, you may need to keep your cat indoors to control its diet.

Untreated Diabetes

Feline diabetes that remains undetected or untreated can have drastic consequences. Typically, the cat becomes less and less active and falls into a coma. So iff your cat is manifesting any of the symptoms described here,  get it checked by your vet as quickly as possible. Doing so can save your cat's life.
