Meet The Robotic Cats

Delightful robotic cats are being used to comfort dementia patients and in some cases make them feel less isolated.

One person who has benefited enormously from the scheme is Doreen, from Cambridgeshire in the UK. Doreen has vascular dementia and lives alone with the support of carers. Her daughter usually visits regularly but has been “locked down” during the Covid-19 crisis and has been unable to see her mother.

Cameras set up within the home showed Doreen looking increasingly lonely and isolated, spending much of her time staring out of the window.

Her daughter spoke to an occupational therapist who told her about the work of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Technology Enabled Care team and how they could provide robotic cats to help patients feel less lonely. As Doreen loved cats it was felt this might help her.

Doreen loves her cat which has had a positive impact on her life.

Councillor Anna Bailey said: “It may seem a small thing to many of us, but it’s wonderful to see how technology like these robotic cats can be used to enhance someone’s life so much, especially as many people are feeling isolated as a result of Covid-19."

The robotic cat is sold by an American company. It’s a battery-powered cuddly toy that purrs, meows and moves. It also responds to touch when it is petted and hugged.

It has helped patients feel a sense of purpose when they pet and cuddle the cat. It helps encourage a sense of empowerment, companionship and enjoyment.

Sneak Thief Caught On Camera

Busted! Tiger is caught in the act.

Canterbury Cathedral in the UK closed its doors to its congregation during lockdown but continued to broadcast via the internet.

The Very Reverend Dr Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury , settled down to preside over an online prayer service, only to be interrupted by one of God's creatures.

Tiger the cat, ignoring the commandment Thou Shalt Not Steal, leapt onto the table to help himself to milk on the reverend's tea tray.

“We’ve acquired a friend this morning,” Dr Willis said as Tiger helped himself to the refreshments.
Tiger is one of four cats at the Deanery, with another named Leo going viral a few weeks ago for disappearing into Dr Willis’ vestments during a service.

The Cathedral has been uploading virtual prayer services as places of worship were closed during the UK-wide lockdown beginning on March 23. It was reopened for visitors on Saturday July 4, and for services of worship on Sunday July 5.

Buckingham Palace Address For Flo

As addresses go, Buckingham Palace, The Royal Mews, London, isn't a bad one to have.

Now Flo, a white Persian cat, has fallen on her three feet to take up residence in the grounds of one the most famous buildings in the world.

She is living with the Queen's chauffeur Andy Fitzgerald whose daughter Victoria works for animal charity, the RSPCA. Flo was discovered pregnant and in a ‘terrible state’ in a dirty shed in London.
She had to have a leg amputated and sadly lost her kitten.

Her recovery was slow and the vets were unsure if she’d pull through.

Victoria said, ‘She really has gone from Aristocat to Aristocrat. She is living a life of luxury compared to where she was before, adding, 'She is getting pampered with me and my parents and she has settled in so well and gets on really well with my other pets.’

Victoria, who has worked for the RSPCA for three years has four other pets including a crossbreed dog called Oscar and two kittens she is hand-rearing.

She added: 'It is the most rewarding part of the job to see an animal who was in such an awful state like Flo was, be rehabilitated and find a loving home - and it's even better that Flo could come and live with us at Buckingham Palace.'

Fluffer The Fluffiest Cat

Pictures courtesy of Arizona Humane Society

An humane society called to rescue a little animal, found the stray was so covered in matted fur it was even difficult to see what type of creature it was.

They found out it was a cat whose owners had died, leaving her to care for her herself.

An incredible  two pounds (just under a kilogram) of matted fur was sheared from the cat, nearly a quarter of her body weight.  Fortunately, the cat was very sweet and tolerant of her grooming session and was otherwise in great health. They named the beautiful little female Fluffer. Just two days later she was adopted and is now living happily in her new home.

The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) shared the story of Fluffer on their Facebook and Instagram pages. They wrote: ‘Show us a better #TransformationTuesday than Fluffer the cat… we’ll wait!"

The AHS has plenty of stories like Fluffer’s as they’ve made it their mission to rescue as many animals they can. They also try not to euthanise any and re-home as many as possible.

Cat Comforts Dog

Joule is a nervous dog who suffers from anxiety when left alone. So with both her owners at work during the day they set up cameras to see how he was coping when they were out of the house.

What they caught on camera shocked them. Their cat Kelvin came to the rescue, cuddling into Joules on the sofa, licking her face and calming her down.

Joules and Kelvin's owner posted the video on Instagram. Explaining more about the unusual friendship, the owner– who didn't want to give their name - said: “I originally had all the cameras up high so I could see the whole room, and I noticed that Joule and Kelvin were on the couch together.

“So I moved the camera to point directly at the couch, and realised that they weren't just on the couch together, but they were snuggling.

“I think Kelvin really helps with Joule's anxiety. Kelvin has always been friendly with the dogs, but I never realised the extent of it until I got the cameras.”

This is obviously a family interested in science.  A joule is the amount of energy exerted when a force of one newton is applied over a displacement of one metre and a Kelvin  is the Standard International ( SI ) unit of thermodynamic temperature.

And please don't ask me what any of that means! Not a clue!

Here's a compilation of a few of the videos the owner has posted on her Instagram account:

Z is for Zipper

Here's Zipper who made an incredible find while being a bit naughty! He started scratching at the wall in his owner's spare bedroom. He peeled back quite a bit of wallpaper and revealed an incredible piece of artwork underneath. The colourful mural covers all four walls of the room.

One wall features an enchanting yet Gothic tree that looks straight from a storybook. Another features orange clouds and a Buddha statue.

Zipper belongs to Ceejae Jackman whose son Garret Jackman, shared a video of the full masterpiece on Facebook. See it HERE - it's incredible. He said the artist, Jody Bayles had contacted him.

Garret said: "He does some really awesome work so show him some love! It's crazy just how fast this got to him but we are very happy that it reached him." Jody made a video of the room in progress. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/Mhzq32K1bgQ
.
Garret said his mother would be keeping the mural. "I will make sure Zipper is adequately rewarded for his amazing find!" he added.

Garret said Zipper gets the credit for uncovering the artwork, but wasn't very helpful in the wallpaper removal process.

"Very playful, and only a little destructive. He was just sitting in the room watching us all remove the wallpaper on Saturday," he said. "It was pretty funny."

X is for Xmas

At Christmastime there are always lots of pictures on the internet of cats making a mess of trees and decorations - I know, I've posted some myself.

But cat owners should beware of all the trappings of the festive season. Here are some of the hazards:
  • Tinsel and decorations can be dangerous if swallowed
  • Curious cats trying to climb Christmas trees are at risk of injury
  • Snow globes can be extremely dangerous as they can contain antifreeze
  • Poinsettia and berries are among the festive plants which pose a risk
  • Some foods and alcohol are also poisonous to our feline friends
You can also 'cat-proof' your Christmas tree.
  • Secure your decorations to the tree as tightly as possible so that they are not easily knocked off with a cheeky tap of the paw
  • Invest in a good quality, heavy base which will prevent your Christmas tree from toppling over, or place weights to secure it at the bottom
  • Consider tethering your tree to the wall or ceiling
  • Hang decorations higher up the tree, out of the reach of playful paws
  • Do not place any presents for your cat containing catnip under the tree – it will only entice them in

In addition, you can set up a play area with some new, interesting items close to the tree to detract their attention.

If your cat is of a playful, mischievous nature then it is a good idea to consider shutting them out of the room in which the Christmas tree is in altogether when you are not around

W is for Walkies

Many people take their cats for walks on leashes, especially in Finland which is a country of cat lovers but with a high number of apartments without gardens.

It's a common sight to see people out and about with their cats. Katariina is one woman who regularly takes her pet out.

"We do have a garden but it is very small," she said.

"My cat Aarii loves it outdoors but I feel she needs to have wider horizons than our garden and needs more exercise. I take her out on a leash every other day for a long walk in the park.

"She loves it and she does all the things she does at home, exploring under bushes, rolling in the dust and checking out the birds. There's one long wall where she jumps up and walks along it. She's become a bit of an attraction for some of the local children - and, boy, does she show off!"

Unfortunately, not all cats like to be on a leash!:

V is for Vaccinations

Thank you to animal charity the RSPCA for this information:

Cat vaccinations help to protect your pets from severe infectious diseases. It also prevents them from passing anything nasty on to other animals in the area. Vaccinating your kitten is one of the most important things you should do in your first few weeks as a cat owner.

When should kittens be vaccinated?
To help protect kittens they'll need two sets of vaccinations to get them started. Kittens should have their first set of vaccinations at nine weeks old and at three months old they should receive the second set to boost their immune system. After this, kittens and cats usually need 'booster' vaccinations every twelve months.

Until your kitten is fully vaccinated (and neutered), you should keep him or her inside.

What diseases can vaccinations protect against?
Cats are commonly vaccinated against:
Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus)
Feline infectious enteritis
Feline leukaemia virus
Your vet can advise which vaccinations your cat or kitten will need to help protect them from infectious diseases.

Who can vaccinate my kitten?
When you get your kitten, one of the first things you should do is register them with a local vet who will be able to carry out the vaccinations your kitten needs.

How long are vaccinations effective for?
Some vaccines are given as booster injections every year. Your vet will provide you with a vaccination record which you will need to keep safe.

U is for Urban Cat Shelter

In most cities there are populations of feral cats. They often live troubled lives, facing danger, illness and starvation.

Now a man has invented the world's first cat shelter powered by Artificial Intelligence. Wan Xi, a computer engineer from Beijing in China, has created a temperature-controlled shelter that provides cats with food and water.

Cat lover Wan XI came up with the idea because he was concerned about the city's stray cat population.

'At first, I just wanted to provide them with a warm place in winter with food and water that is not frozen,' Mr Xi told China Morning Daily. But after working with a team of animal welfare experts he came up with a more sophisticated design.

With intelligent temperature and humidity control, as well as a ventilation system, the AI cat shelter provides a comfortable place for stray cats, providing fresh air and a constant temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, the ideal temperature for cats. Abundant food and water is provided and volunteers constantly refill the bowls.

The shelter claims it is able to identify 174 types of cat while flagging-up possible diseases via a smart camera. The sophisticated equipment can spot conditions like  gingivostomatitis, feline herpesvirus (FHV), and skin problems. It can also tell whether a cat has been sterilized. This data is then sent to nearby volunteers who can provide better help to these cats in need.

T is for Thief

THEY seek him here, they seek him there but there's always a wily cat burglar evading capture - because cats like to steal.

These feline felons often take a fancy to particular types of items and then set about stealing them, be it food items, socks, shoe laces, underwear, toys, plants or boxes.

They then pile them up under beds, sofas or cupboards, any where you can't easily reach them.

So why do these kleptomaniac kats act in they way they do? They could be using stealing as a tactic for attention or they could merely be following their hunting instincts and regard the items as prey.

Cats need stimulation so if your feline friend is exhibiting stealing behaviour that is excessive or troublesome, try playing with them more and buying or making them more stimulating toys. Don't punish them or discipline them because they won't understand and in their eyes they are doing nothing wrong. You will only end up alienating their affection.

Another reason  could be that your cat is not satisfied with his food or eating schedule. Cats in the wild will eat periodically throughout the day but this is difficult if you have to go out to work. Cats in the wild will sometimes bury their food so they can eat it later. When cats steal and hide items, they may be mimicking this food-related behaviour.

S is for Sugar

Chocolate for you is fine but don't feed it to your cat

WHY do our carnivore cats turn up their noses at chocolate bars but wait expectantly by their bowls for chicken chunks?

Bears, who are technically carnivores, would probably snaffle down a chocolate bar or two, given half a chance, especially if they contained honey. The difference is that cats do not have sweet-taste receptors on their tongues but bears do.

Never feed chocolate to your cat, it is harmful to them. Read this post for a list of harmful items: Household Products That Can Harm Your Cat

Domestic cats aren’t the only carnivores to have no taste for sweet things. Their close relative the Asiatic lion is another. Now researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, USA, have discovered other species that lack the sweet receptor.

Researchers studied 12 species of carnivores and analyzed their taste-receptor genes to see if cats were the only ones that lacked the sweet taste receptor.

Of these the bottle-nosed dolphin, the sea lion, the fur seal, the Pacific harbor seal, the Asian otter, the spotted hyena, the fossa and the banded linsang also lacked the sweet-taste receptor.

The dolphin has even lost the ability to taste bitter substances, and has very few taste buds in general.

Sugars are carbohydrates but if your diet is practically all meat, there’s no need to keep the receptor intact.

R is for Rats

OH RATS! Who's come to play with me today?

Rats in Colombia have been trained to sniff out landmines. More than 100,000 mines are believed to have been buried by leftist rebels in the country.

Rats have proved to be experts at finding the mines - but there was a problem. The rodents were taught to freeze in front of mines, but had difficulty staying put for fear of being attacked by predators.

Bringing them face to face with their natural enemy, the cat, allowed them to stay more focused once they were released, said veterinarian Luisa Mendez, who worked with the animals.

“Here the cats play with the rats instead of attacking them,” Mendez said. “The cats wear shields on their nails so they can’t cause any injuries and as a result the rats feel comfortable playing around them.”

Col Javier Cifuentes, who oversees the project, said the rats’ success rate in mine detection was 96%. Unlike dogs, the rats weigh a lot less and therefore don’t trigger explosions.

Colombia is home to the world’s largest number of land mine victims.

Q is for Quotes

Cats have inspired many quotes about their unique characters - not all of them flattering!

There are those that emphasise their almost mystical qualities, like:

There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.” – Albert Schweitzer

How we behave toward cats here below determines our status in heaven.” – Robert A. Heinlein

Then there are those affectionate ones:

I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” – Jean Cocteau

Just watching my cats can make me happy.” – Paula Cole

You can not look at a sleeping cat and feel tense.” – Jane Pauley

Then there are my favourite quotes, obviously written by people who seem to have a great insight into the feline psyche!

"In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this." Terry Pratchett
"My cat is not insane; she’s just a really good actress." P.C. Cast
"The way to get on with a cat is to treat it as an equal – or even better, as the superior it knows itself to be." Elizabeth Peters
"Cats can work out mathematically the exact place to sit that will cause most inconvenience." Pam Brown
"Dogs come when they’re called; cats take a message and get back to you later." Mary Bly
"My cats inspire me daily. They inspire me to get a dog!" Greg Curtis
"After scolding one’s cat one looks into its face and is seized by the ugly suspicion that it understood every word. And has filed it for reference." Charlotte Gray
"Cats’ hearing apparatus is built to allow the hooman voice to easily go in one ear and out the other."  Stephen Baker
"When my cats aren’t happy, I’m not happy. Not because I care about their mood but because I know they’re just sitting there thinking up ways to get even." Percy Bysshe Shelley
"A cat isn’t fussy – just so long as you remember he likes his milk in the shallow, rose-patterned saucer and his fish on the blue plate. From which he will take it, and eat it off the floor." Arthur Bridges
One final thought:
"There is, incidentally, no way of talking about cats that enables one to come off as a sane person." Dan Greenberg

P is Paw Pals

Children in Scotland have been asked to write letters to the animals in an Aberdeen shelter in a scheme called Paw Pals.

The animal sanctuary, Mrs Murray's Home for Stray Cats and Dogs, asked children who are at home during the coronavirus pandemic to write a letter or a poem for the four-legged residents or to create some artwork.

Centre manager Marie Simpson said: “With the lockdown situation and children at home, we understand many of them will be trying to keep up with their home schooling.

“We thought this would be a fun way for them to interact with the animals while also practising their English and art.
“It’s been a bit bleak since we’ve closed to the public and the pictures are a nice way to brighten up their kennels.
“We also thought this would be a way to get kids thinking about the welfare of the animals that aren’t in homes right now. They’re showing compassion for them.
“It’s also good for us to get the animals involved and keep spirits high.”

One letter to Diesel, a five-year-old Akita, read: “You are the cutest thing ever and my granny has a black Labrador called Bailey. We might come see you soon, Diesel. Bailey is 10-years-old like me. I am a huge dog-lover and I can’t wait to see you.”

Mrs Murray’s has been forced to suspend rehoming for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing pandemic and has asked the public not to visit the centre in person.

Letters, poems and drawings can be posted to Mrs Murray’s Cat and Dog Home, Brickfield, East Seaton, Aberdeen, AB24 1XL or emailed to mrsmurrays@btconnect.com.
