M is for Meals

Top tips for feeding cats from animal charity the RSPCA:
  • Without drinking water, your cat could become severely ill within hours. Give your cat constant access to clean drinking water.
Note: Cow’s milk is not a substitute for water.
  • Cats need a well-balanced, meat-based diet to stay fit and healthy - they cannot be vegetarian. They are obligate carnivores. In very simple terms, this means that cats require meat in their diet. They have specific nutrient needs that can only be supplied through the ingestion of animal meat.
  • Make sure your cat eats a balanced diet  that is suitable for their age, health status and lifestyle.
  • Most typical human food does not meet the nutritional needs of cats, and some human foods can even be poisonous to cats, e.g. onions. [Here's a post I wrote earlier about household items that are poisonous to cats.]
  • Cats naturally eat several small meals per day. Make sure you feed your cat every day and try to split their daily intake into several small meals (unless advised otherwise by your vet).
  • How much your cat needs to eat depends on their age, lifestyle and health.
  • Always read and follow the feeding instructions that relate to the cat food you buy.
  • If a cat eats more food than they need they will become overweight and may suffer. Equally, if a cat is eating too little, they will become underweight. Adjust the amount of food according to the needs of your cat.
  • If you provide a litter tray, make sure their food and water positioned well away from it. Most cats will not eat if their food is placed too close to their toilet site.
  • Talk to a vet if your cat’s eating and drinking habits change - it could be a sign they’re ill.

L is for Cat Language

Cats may not be able to talk but they still have many ways of communicating with humans and with each other.

They have many ways of communicating with you, from the look in their eye and the tone of their sounds to the position of their ears and the twitch of their tail.

When it comes to vocalising, you can soon get to know what they are trying to say by their chirps and meows. They can tell you when they're hungry, when they want a cuddle and if they're feeling threatened or are in pain.

Purring is usually a sign of contentment. Cats purr whenever they're happy but sometimes a  cat may purr for other reasons. See this previous post: Inappropriate Purring

Growling, hissing or spitting indicate a cat who is annoyed, frightened, angry or aggressive. Leave this cat alone.

A yowl or howl tells you your cat is in some kind of distress. Find your cat if they're making this noise. However, in unneutered and unspayed cats, these sounds can be part of mating behaviour.

Chattering, chittering or twittering are the noises your cat makes when they're sitting in the window watching birds or squirrels. Some experts think that this is an exaggeration of the "killing bite," when a cat grabs their prey by the neck.

When it comes to body language, your cat has it down to a fine art. Does your cat arch their back up to meet your hand when you pet them? This means they're enjoying this contact with you. Do they shrink away under your slightest touch? Save the petting for later: they're not interested right now.
Pay attention to your cat's eyes, ears, body and tail—they're all telling the story.

Here are a few more clues.

Ears forward: alert, interested or happy.

Ears backward, sideways, or flat: irritable, angry or frightened

Eyes with pupils constricted: offensively aggressive, but, conversely, they could be content. You can see which by their body language.

Eyes with pupils dilated: nervous or submissive (if somewhat dilated), defensively aggressive (if fully dilated), but possibly playful - again,  judge which by their body language.

Tail erect, fur flat: alert, inquisitive or happy

Fur standing on end: angry or frightened

Tail held very low or tucked between legs: insecure or anxious

Tail thrashing back and forth: agitated. The faster the tail, the angrier the cat

Tail straight up, quivering: excited, really happy. If your cat hasn't been neutered or spayed, they could be getting ready to spray something.

Back arched, fur standing on end: frightened or angry

Back arched, fur flat: welcoming your touch

Lying on back, purring: very relaxed

Lying on back, growling: upset and ready to strike

When your cat rubs their chin and body against you they are marking their territory - another way of telling you they love you!

K is For Kneading

Kneading - or 'making biscuits' as it is sometimes known - is  uniquely feline behaviour. It is that thing they do when they push in and out with their paws, just like a baker kneading dough.

They always knead on a soft object like a cushion, a pile of laundry - or you! - and are usually contentedly purring as they carry out this rhythmic motion.

It is an instinctive action and is probably because as kittens they kneaded their mothers to stimulate the flow of milk. Cats find it comforting.

Another theory is that it goes back to the days when wild cats patted down tall vegetation like grass to make a soft bed to sleep on or to give birth.

Also, cats have scent glands in the soft pads on the bottoms of their paws. When they knead, some of their unique scent is released and serves as a territorial marker.
So when your cat is kneading your lap, he’s not only telling you he feels comfortable and secure, but he’s claiming you as his own.

J is for Jokes

Just in case any of you need cheering up, I have gathered together a selection of funny (or groan-inducing, depending on your point of view!) jokes. If you have any you want to share, post them in the comments and let's all have a laugh during these troubled times. Stay strong and stay safe.

  • A cat was playing poker with his friend at the zoo. Half way through the game he threw down the cards and said, "I'm not playing with you any more." "Why not?" asked his friend. "Because you're a cheetah," he replied.
  • Did you hear about the cat who swallowed a ball of wool? She had mittens.
  • A man accidentally left a door open and let his neighbour's cat loose. The cat disappeared. He felt bad about this and when the cat had been missing for quite some time, said to the neighbour: "I feel awful, I'd like to replace your cat for you." The neighbour replied: "Great. How good are you at catching mice?"
  • A mother mouse and a baby mouse are walking along when suddenly a cat attacks them. The mother mouse shouts “BARK!” and the cat runs away. “See?” the mother mouse says to her baby. “Now do you see why it’s important to learn a foreign language?”
  • One day a kitten was playing rather boisterously and got his tail caught in a door, losing most of it. His mother picked him up by the scruff of his neck and ran out of door and took him to a shop. "What shop is this?" asked the little kitten. His mother replied, "It's the re-tail store, silly."
  • A mother cat intervened when her two kittens were fighting. She boxed them round the ears with her paw and shouted, "Stop that you two!" which they did. "Now hiss and make up!"
  • Cats always get their own way and do you know why? It's because they are so purr-suasive.

I is for Iconic Movie Cats

I'm a sucker for a movie with a cat in it - except those thrillers and horror films where you fear the featured cat is going to come to a sticky end. Hate those. But there have been some great films featuring cats and here are my favourites:

Breakfast at Tiffany's: The lovely ginger cat (pictured above) in Breakfast At Tiffany's is described as “poor slob without a name” by Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn). The cat who took the role (called Orangey) is one of the most famous cat actors of all time. He also starred in the film Rhubarb, Rhubarb as the cat who inherited a baseball team. His amazing credit said: “Introducing the newest addition to Hollywood’s great galaxy of stars—that dynamic, exciting, scintillating personality RHUBARB (by special arrangement with the S.P.C.A.).  His film roles didn't stop there. He also appeared in The Comedy of Terrors and was a guest in Batman and My Favorite Martian.

Floyd with Patrick Swayze

Ghost: Floyd is the name of the cat in Ghost. I couldn't find his real name. After Sam (Patrick Swayze) is killed, he tries to warn wife Molly (Demi Moore) that she’s in danger. He realizes that their tabby, Floyd, can still sense him, so when his killer (Rick Aviles) breaks into their apartment, Sam screams at Floyd. The cat jumps at the killer, scaring him off, and saving the day.

Mr Bigglesworth

Austin Powers: SGC Belfry Ted Nude-Gent is the wonderful real life name of the Sphynx cat in the Austin Powers franchise. He plays Mr Bigglesworth, Dr Evil's hairless pet. Along with Dr Evil, Mr Bigglesworth was forced into a hasty escape in a cryogenic capsule. All of his hair fell out during the process making him completely bald.

Bob and his real life owner James Bowen

A Street Cat Named Bob:  This is a real story based on the book of the same name with Bob playing himself. Drug addict busker James Bowen found the injured cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation and took him in. Bob repaid his kindness a thousandfold.  Bob, dressed in his usual red scarf attended the film’s London premiere where he met Prince William and Katherine. I wrote a post about the film back in 2016, see HERE.

Marlon Brando and the stray cat

The Godfather: Don Corleone’s cat in The Godfather was a stray tabby who frequently roamed the Paramount set. He was spotted by director Francis Ford Coppola who put the cat in Marlon Brando's hands without warning.  Brando, always the improviser, made the cat a crucial part of the scene. However, the cat’s purring drowned out some of Brando’s sotto voce dialogue, which had to be re-dubbed.

The evil Blofeld (Donald Pleasance) with his cat

From Russia with Love: Who can forget the evil Blofeld stroking his gorgeous white Angora cat as he confronts James Bond? Blofeld appeared in several Bond films but to my mind the original and the best was Donald Pleasence. The cat also graced the laps of Charles Gray, Telly Savalas, and Max Von Sydow.

Hayley Mills and that darn cat!

That Darn Cat: The Randall sisters, Patti (Hayley Mills) and Ingrid (Dorothy Provine), never have a dull moment, thanks to the antics of D.C., their trouble-making Siamese cat. When D.C. wanders into an apartment where bank teller Margaret Miller (Grayson Hall) is being held hostage, the clever captive writes "help" on her watchband and attaches it to the cat. Upon finding the message, Patti and Ingrid contact the FBI, and soon agent Zeke Kelso (Dean Jones) is there to investigate.

H is for Hiding

When I first brought one of my cats home from the shelter, he spent the first two weeks hiding under the bath. He eventually came out and a few days later it was as if he'd always lived with us.

Hiding is instinctive for cats. In the dim and distant past their ancestors sought out secluded spaces to give birth and to hid from predators. Many cats naturally seek out hidden spots, like the back of the closet or under the bed.

However, if your normally social cat suddenly starts hiding something different might be going on.

They could be ill or in pain. When they are sick they hide so take them to a vet for a check-up.

They may be stressed or anxious. Has something changed at home? Have you introduced a new pet? Having you started playing the TV at high volume? Stress hiding doesn't usually last too long as they get used to the new situation.

If your female cat hasn't been spayed she might be pregnant. Pregnant cats don’t always look pregnant and it’s possible for their condition to go unnoticed until the kittens are born. A few days before they give birth, pregnant cats will seek out a hiding place.

Make sure you cat doesn't have fleas. If they are being bitten they think they can hide from the fleas. If they have taken to hiding up high, that's another sign. They think they can avoid the fleas by getting away from where they are e.g. in furniture, pillows and carpets.

Never forcibly remove your cat from his hiding place. This will stress him out even more. Coax him out or gently remove him.

G is for Got The Moves

[Sorry if you have already read this. I posted it by accident on Saturday, rather than scheduling it. I took it down as soon as I noticed.]

Here's a question for you. Can cats dance? Having grown up with cats and now having a very fine feline of my own, my answer is yes. If you don't believe me, here's the proof.

Just a short post today. I have all the boring old housework to catch up on and a couple of writing deadlines have crept up on me. But I hope you enjoy the short clip below and a few pictures of dancing cats.

F is for Flower Power

Elmo was a cool cat who was definitely into flower power.

Most cats bring presents to their owners - mice, birds, maybe even a baby rabbit. But Elmo, of  San Jose, made the news a few years back because he gave up little creatures for more inanimate objects.

He progressed from mice to gloves...... yes, gloves! His first trophy was a gardening glove and then he started bringing home latex gloves from a nearby medical center.

"Then one day we woke to magnolia blossom petals strewn throughout the living room. We praised him enormously," said his owner Laurel Beecher, reminiscing about her quirky rescue cat who is sadly no longer with us.

"He brought more. We praised him more. Gradually, there were fewer gloves and mice, and more and more plant pieces."

Elmo then decided the offerings should be fresh tips of young branches of any available trees.

"We praised him profusely and placed the most beautiful ones on the place mat next to his food dish," said Laurel.

He was such a proud cat that he sometimes woke his owners up in the middle of the night to show them his latest trophy.

Gone but never forgotten.

E is for Eyes

Cats show their emotions through their eyes, using pupil size and eyelid position to show what they are feeling. If they are afraid, happy, excited or aggressive, they will communicate with you. Here's how to decipher what they are feeling:
.
Wide Open
Alert, wide-open eyes signal trust. In friendly greetings, pupils are at normal dilation. The eyelids may be squinty, brows are soft, and the cat may offer cheek rubs. Accept this as a sign of love and trust.

Unblinking Stare
When a cat starts to show interest, the eyes look more directly with an unblinking stare at the object, person, or animal of interest, and the pupils dilate slightly. The general message is “I know you’re there and I don’t want a fight.” But the unblinking stare is also a communication megaphone for wanna-be aggressive cats to adversaries. This is an important control message in multi-cat households with limited resources such as food, water, litter box, toys, and territory. People often miss the cue because of the subtlety.

Direct Stare
A direct stare in cat language is threatening and confrontational. An offensively aggressive cat’s pupils may be slits or dilated. Squinty eyelids protect the eyes from potential injury. In defensive aggression, pupils are dilated and brow furrowed. Avoid interacting with this cat. If you’re not familiar with a particular cat, avoid risk of injury by not making direct eye contact.

Pain
When a cat is experiencing body pain, pupils are dilated. A cat experiencing eye pain may have pupils that are dilated or constricted, depending on the injury or underlying disease. Squinting also indicates pain in the body or eye. Bloodshot eyes may also signal pain.

Slow Eye Blinks
This is the best look to get from your cat. Slow eye blinks express love and trust. The eyes, lids partially closed, have a sleepy, dreamy appearance. If you get a blink like this, do one right back to show you love them too.

Or it may be that they don't want you to know!

D is for Domesticated Cats

Felis silvestris lybica

Most people know the story of how cats became domesticated. They protected stores of grain from rats and mice and eventually entered into a mutually beneficial relationship with humans who cared for the cats so they would stay close by.

Domesticated cats are all descended from wildcats, Felis silvestris lybica,  that originated in the Fertile Crescent in the Near East Neolithic period and in ancient Egypt in the Classical period.

So how did cats spread around the world? By analyzing the ancient DNA of cat remains found in port cities, scientists believe cats were taken onto ships to help protect food by killing rodents. When they reached harbour, some of the cats jumped ship.

It may not have been only the Egyptians who domesticated cats because in 2004, French archaeologists discovered a 9,500 year old cat grave in Cyprus.

C is for Catnip

Does your cat love catnip in toys or catmint in the garden? Some go mad for it - running around, licking the catnip, rolling onto their back or going limp and purring.

Catnip belongs to the mint family  and includes nepetalactone, which is the compound that attracts your cat.  They love the smell of it.

Other compounds in catnip affect neurotransmitters, "resulting in inhibition of central nervous system activity," said Dr. Bruce Kornreich, an associate director for education and outreach with the Feline Health Center at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York.

It may appear your cat is getting high - as if he is on drugs - but there's no evidence that catnip is operating in the same way as, for example, cannabis or cocaine.

And it seems that many members of the cat family love catnip.

Hunters have used catnip to trap cougars and mountain lions, hanging dried plants to lure the big cats with their tempting aroma. Studies have also shown that lions, leopards and jaguars respond to the compounds found in catnip, though tigers appear to be unaffected,

So if you want to spoil your own little lion, get him some catnip!

B is for Birthday: How to Throw a Party for Your Cat

Cats like parties too and even if you don't know their exact birthdate, you can celebrate their adoptaversary. However, there are a few things you should know before getting out the rabbit jelly and Tom and Jerry Ice Cream.

Party Paraphernalia: Go to an expensive shop and spend loads of cash on birthday items like party bags, toys and games. The next day, throw it all away because the only things your cat was interested in were the cardboard boxes it all came in.

Party food: Go to an expensive fishmonger's and butcher's and spend loads of cash on top quality fish and meat. Take hours lovingly preparing it. The next day, throw it all out because your cat has filled up on spiders and woodlice and turned his nose up at it.

Invitations: Go to an expensive stationer's and stock up on gold-embossed cards with a picture of a mouse on them. Take them home to write out to all your friends and neighbours. Half an hour later, throw them all away because your cat has shredded them in a fit of pique.

Music: Spare no expense in hiring a top band. When they turn up install them in a marquee in the garden that cost an arm and a leg to hire. Ten minutes later ask them all to go home because your cat hates the noise and is hiding under the garden shed and refuses to come out.

Gifts: Go to an expensive emporium and spend half a day and a month's wages picking out a state-of-the art cat toy. The next day dismantle it and put it in the attic because, apart from one sniff, your cat has shown no interest in it whatsoever.

Birthday Cake: See under Party Food.

Guests: Do ask everyone in the world you want to impress - your boss, your mother-in-law, the new neighbours - and then hide away from them for the next five years because your cat dumped a half-chewed mouse at their feet and then threw up all over their shoes.

A is for The Amazing Acro-Cats

So here it is, my first post in the 2020 A to Z Blogging Challenge. I hope you find it interesting. Introducing the letter A!

Those of you who have tried to persuade a cat to do anything other than what he wants to do will be in awe of Samantha Martin whose moggies, The Acro-Cats, put on shows for the public.

Cats playing musical instruments, riding skateboards, jumping through hoops, pushing each other in little trolleys and walking the tight-rope, what's not to like? Judge for yourself in the video above.

One amusing reviewer said: "Their music sucks and each song sounds like their previous one, but my son's band music sounds exactly the same. At least it's much more pleasant to look at cats rather than teenage boys in leather pants."

As you'd expect with a troupe of cats, not all of them are well-behaved and it seems they tend to lose interest and occasionally wander off into the audience, which all adds to the appeal.

The shows include a performance by the Rock-Cats which, not surprisingly, are billed as "the only cat band in existence". At Christmas you can expect to hear songs like A Cat in a Manger and Catnip Roasting on an Open Fire.
